The Consequences is a riveting sequel to Sharon Brownlie’s first book, Betrayal.
We first meet the protagonist, Helen King, a troubled woman with a horrific past in book one, Betrayal; her story concludes in book two, The Consequences.
Helen King was sexually and physically abused as a child, by her father. It took her many years to build up enough courage to expose him. However, when she did; she was shunned and put away. Helen’s repressed memories were triggered as an adult when she accidentally bumped into one of her betrayers. Memories flooded her mind and fueled her body with rage. It was after meeting this first betrayer that Helen started to plan her revenge. She tracked down each person who shunned her and killed them one by one. The only death she felt any guilt for was for Toofy, the man who loved her.
In book two: The Consequences, Helen is on trial for the murder of four people. She has little doubt that the judge will sentence her to a life in jail. But Helen has a plan. She wants to tell her side of the story. She’s not done with Di Brennan yet. When the news about Helen King reaches the police station, DI Brennan, and her colleagues are shocked, speechless.
This is a well-written and compelling sequel. It is a must read, for anyone who has already read book one in the series, Betrayal. The Consequences can be read as a stand alone, but has a much greater impact when read as a sequel. I recommend this book to anyone who enjoys a character-driven and emotionally charged novel.
