The Barefoot Summer is a sweet romantic tale as well as an entertaining cozy mystery.
Kate, Amanda, and Jamie Steele were all prime suspects for the murder of Conrad Steele. Detective Kramer had a nagging feeling that one or two, or possibly all three of the widows had a hand in Conrad’s death. The Detective’s theory was that, when these women discovered that they were all married simultaneously, to Conrad Steele, they conspired to kill him.
Kate, Amanda, and Jamie were furious. They all, unfortunately, decided to take refuge at the lake cabin in Bootleg, Tx. Each woman figured, of course, that the cabin belonged to her. At first, the three of them could hardly tolerate one another, but by the end of the summer, the women felt more like family than competitors. Each woman had gained something positive from living in Bootleg, Tx. Jamie had a budding romance beginning with her daughter’s best friend’s father, Paul. Amanda fell in love with Bootleg and wanted her family to grow up there. Kate felt free for the first time in her life and even contemplated selling her oil business to stay on in Bootleg. She also couldn’t stop her developing feelings for a certain rancher, Detective Kramer. Despite the fact, that Kate, Amanda, and Jamie were suspected of murdering their husband, not only did they find peace in Bootleg, Tx, they were accepted by the community as well.
The Barefoot Summer is a well-written, heartwarming novel, with interesting characters and natural flowing dialogue. I very much enjoyed reading this book.
