UNRAVELING OLIVER by Liz Nugent–Book Review

Oliver 850.jpg

Don’t Miss Liz Nugget’s Brilliant, New, Chilling, Psychological Thriller- Coming 8/22/17
I loved it!

Unraveling Oliver is an outstanding, captivating, and unforgettable psychological dark thriller. It’s hard to believe that this book is Liz Nugent’s debut novel. Unraveling Oliver is an intriguing, superbly written and brilliant read.

Oliver Ryan was severely neglected by his father. He was left at a boarding school until his college years. He would watch from the school window the house his father lived in with the family he was supposed to be part of. His father paid for his boarding school, but that was the extent of his care. Oliver would watch his father from the window interact with his half brother, but never him. Did Oliver become evil because of his upbringing or was he born that way?

The book begins with Oliver Ryan beating his wife, Alice, into a coma. Everyone was shocked that a famous writer of children’s books, could be so viciously violent, especially to a person he supposedly loved. Alice was a kind, loyal wife, and a great supporter of Oliver’s writing. She was the illustrator for all of his books.

Every chapter in the book is narrated by either Oliver or a significant person in his life. They tell the story of what he was like as a child, a teen, a husband, and finally a famous author. Oliver’s life literally unravels for the reader. When I read about the treatment, he received from his father as a child; I felt sorry for him. But that changed after high school. When Oliver attended college, he had his first taste of freedom, and he loved it. He learned very quickly that he could use his charismatic charm to his advantage. Except for his father’s approval, Oliver got whatever he wanted. Oliver was a polite; handsome man and was able to use his desirability to manipulate people. In a word, Oliver Ryan was irresistible, and he knew it.

As Oliver’s evil deeds began to add up, he hid his true self. Not even Alice knew who her husband really was. That would all change, though, when his past caught up with him. Don’t miss reading this extraordinary and engrossing book. I highly recommend it.

Thank you, Gallery/Scout Press and NetGalley, for my advanced review copy. I loved it!

Darkly Wood II by Max Power

Darkly wood 2:850.jpg

If You Love A Scary Story, Then Darkly Wood II Is For You!

In book two, the story once again revolves around Darkly Wood, a ghastly place, where people have disappeared. Daisy May, a Darkly Wood survivor, shivered at the thought, of having to return to that place, but felt she had no choice. Her granddaughter, Holly, was missing and there was no doubt in her mind as to where she was. Darkly Wood was an alarming and terrifying place where blood-thirsty creatures thrived, and nothing was as it seemed. The last thing Daisy May wanted to do, was to enter Darkly Wood again, but if Holly had any chance of survival, she’d have to be found quickly; and Daisy May was the only person who knew exactly where Holly would be. Daisy May and Rose, Holly’s mother, entered the dark, forrest, and as they knew they would, faced horrifying evil. But, the absolute worse was a hideous, cold, calculating demon of a man, Mr. Wormhold. Would they survive Darkly Wood? Maybe, but then again, maybe not.

Although horror is not my usual genre of choice, I have read Max Power’s work before and wanted to check this book out. I was completely captivated. Darkly Wood II is a bone chilling, engrossing story that had me flipping the pages and cringing in my seat. If you don’t mind reading a dark, frightening, blood-curdling story, with a bit of romance and a giant dose of creepiness to it, then Darkly Wood II is your book. Max Power is a talented author, a great storyteller, and a master at spinning tales. You won’t be disappointed.

Bully Boy Blue by John Nicholl

Gripping..:800.jpg

Bully Boy Blue is an Intense Dark Thriller.

Inspector Michael Conner was more than just a bully and wife-beater; he was a smooth-talking manipulator as well. Michael was relentless in his cruel treatment to his wife. Kathy Conner was once a happy woman with ambitions. But, Michael’s verbal, emotional, and physical abuse had broken her down. She felt alone in the world without support. Michael had convinced her family, friends, and the law officers at the station, that Kathy was not right in the head.

Kathy was beaten down, with no hope. Her calls for help had gone unanswered for a year. And, every time she’d tried to escape, Michael would find her, drag her home, and beat her. Kathy found an inner strength, though, after becoming pregnant for the second time. Kathy was determined not to allow her husband to end this life like he did the first.

Michael had done his best to convince people to ignore his crazy wife’s pleas for help. He underestimated Kathy, though. Thinking that she was brainless, was a big mistake.

This is a well-written dark novella. My emotions were in turmoil from the very first page. Bully Boy Blue is not for the fainthearted, however. It’s graphic, violent, and disturbing. It’s unfortunate, though, that monsters like Michael actually do exist.

Thank you, John Nicholl, for my complimentary copy of Bully Boy Blue.
